Orgasm Inc.: The Strange Science of Women’s Pleasure is a 2009 documentary film by Liz Canner. As she describes in the film, Canner was initially hired to make erotic videos for a pharmaceutical company that was trying to develop a drug for women that would be the market equivalent of Viagra. As we learn in the documentary, the medical diagnosis “Female Sexual Dysfunction” in fact originated in the need of pharmaceutical companies to have a medical condition for the drugs that they were trying to market: the medical condition was invented because the pharmaceutical industry saw an opportunity to make money following the success of the “Blockbuster” drug Viagra. Canner’s documentary includes interviews with representatives of the drug companies who are trying to develop a “pink Viagra”; with women who are seeking medical help for their perceived sexual problems; and with feminist activists such as Leonore Tiefer and Kim Airs.
