This module introduced students to discourses of purity and pollution, the supposed innocence of children, notions of morality and immorality, and how the concepts of the “queer child” registers in society in the twenty-first century. We explored who is deemed pure and how this understanding of purity or innocence changes of the course of time. Indeed, the discourse of childhood innocence is often used to defend and regulate children’s access to knowledge about their bodies, sex, and sexualities. This type of control is exerted by various institutions such as the family or education and diminishes at best and completely dismisses at worst a children’s agency.
